This is the original home of 4 Pines. Now it’s home to their experimental Keller Door releases. It’s the place to go if you want to try something a little special.
The 4 Pines brew pub sits overlooking Manly wharf. On a sunny evening, watching the horizon slowly darken, there aren’t many places you’d rather be.
Stay for the Keller Door
If you’re a fan of craft beer, or even pretty new to it in Sydney, you must have tried a 4 Pines beer. Whether you’ve gone for their Hottest 100 favourite, Pale Ale, or something like their Hefeweizen or ever popular ESB, you’ll know what they’re all about.
Their core range of beers are perfectly executed and beautifully fresh at the brew pub. A tasting paddle is a great way to try their full range on tap. No trip to Manly is complete without one.
However, unless you’ve managed to get hold of one of their seasonal bottled Keller Door releases, you might not have experienced the truly creative (and even the weird and wacky) things the North Shore brewers are capable of.
If you’re heading to the Manly brew pub, you have to try whatever Keller Door release is on tap. They brew them right there, so the beer has travelled mere metres from kettle to glass.
They even do growler fills and takeaways, and you’ll see plenty of locals swinging by to pick up a case of beer. It’s well worth getting a growler fill of a Keller Door release, especially if it’s one they won’t be bottling. It’s the perfect way to share good beer with mates.
The Keller Door releases are a massive incentive to check out the Manly brew pub.
Food and atmosphere
As far as Sydney brew pubs go, 4 Pines offer some of the best food going. From spicy mussels with bread baked with their own stout, to beer battered chips and their mega burger, you can’t really go wrong.
Being right by the sea, it’s obviously a pretty chilled out atmosphere at 4 Pines. The guys working behind the bar often give off a bit of a surfer vibe, they’re pretty laid back. But they know their stuff and they’ll happily talk to you about the beers on tap, and even offer tasters of beers if you’re unsure.
The layout of the brew pub is light and breezy, with an open balcony facing out across the wharves, and plenty of space inside. The light streams in and it’s incredible on a summer afternoon.
You’ll see kegs lying around as well as the distinctive 4 Pines branding everywhere.
Throughout the week you’ll see the brewers busy at work.
Sydney Craft Beer Week Events
As a staple of the Sydney craft beer scene, 4 Pines get involved with events like Sydney Craft Beer Week. They’ve run small tours of the Keller Door brewery, explaining the brewing process and giving tasters.
These tours are great for hardcore geeks (who will love getting up close to the fermenters) as well as for people starting out in their understanding of brewing.
The 4 Pines brew pub in Manly is one of the first craft beer venues I went to after moving to Sydney. It holds a special place in my heart.
Keeping That Local Feel
4 Pines have been going gangbusters in recent years. They’re now one of the biggest craft breweries.
But how can they keep that local, small craft beer feel when their production has ramped up so dramatically that now even committed VB drinkers recognise the name?
By staying committed to their original Manly location and by producing fantastic beer.
