4 Pines have bottled the taste of the Australian summer in their Keller Door release, Citrus IPA.
This is like biting into enormous wedges of orange and grapefruit. The aromas are mouth-watering, and there’s a deep juiciness that makes you want to chew despite the light and silky mouthfeel.
A slight but delicious resin note hits you on the third and fourth gulp. And you do want to gulp this, like you’d want to munch through fresh citrus fruit on a hot summer day.
This beer drinks under its 7% ABV. It’s a summer beer but not in the current mode of “session IPAs”, it’s a full IPA, true to the Aussie interpretation.
The copy on the side of the bottle really captures what this beer is about. It’s for a proper Aussie summer day, the ones you (but unfortunately not I) had as a kid. It’s made for an arvo by the pool.
Even if you’re not familiar with 4 Pines’ usual portfolio of beers you’ll be taken aback by the artwork on the bottle (if you do know 4 Pines’ work, you’ll know it’s a big departure from the norm).
A wacky, child-like, cartoon; like those you spent too much time watching as a kid but wish you could spend more time watching now . It’s summer in a bottle. Memories of childhood with an adult-only kick!
It’s a shame this is only a Keller Door small batch. It would be an awesome addition to most breweries’ portfolios.
These will surely soon be gone, and if you do find one, I’m not certain how it will have lasted.
I recommend drinking 4 Pines Citrus IPA straight from the fridge in a Spiegelau IPA glass.
From: Manly, NSW
Beer style: American IPA (but it’s Aussie as!)
Pair with: Australia Day sausage sizzle!
