It’s impressive that craft beer has now penetrated even the most tourist driven parts of Sydney. That’s what’s happened with Beer Deluxe opening in Darling Harbour.
First and foremost, Beer Deluxe could be great for the education of Sydney’s beer drinkers.
Solid Beer Geekery
Their beer bible contains not just their bottle list but a history of beer and a background on particular styles as well as a full glossary including even some of the most obscure beer terms.
There are twenty taps with everything from macro lagers through to local seasonal releases and imported favourites.
There’s an indoor seating area, an upstairs with views over the yachts and ferries in Darling Harbour, as well as an outside “beer garden” featuring big tables and an astro-turf surface. It’s a good place to soak up some sun and look at the shimmering water while you enjoy your beer.
Inside, quotes about beer and the logos of breweries adorn the walls. There are beer bottles displayed in glass cases. But the best part is the bar, with an impressive array of tap decals and a fridge packed with a variety of styles from around the world.
While the tap list when I went featured the likes of Akasha, Wayward and Young Henrys, I’d love to see an even bigger focus on local stuff, particularly in the bottle list. Otherwise though, it’s an eclectic mix which covers all tastes whether you’ve never drunk craft beer or whether you’re a hardcore beer nerd.
A Good Focus On Food
The food is great too, so whether you’re there on a Saturday lunch time or you’re having a big session after work, there’ll be something good to soak up the beer. There are fancy fish dishes, nice burgers and chips, and dips and cheeses, so the menu covers every possible need.
Rumour has it Beer Deluxe might be venturing into beer and food pairing too which can only serve to improve people’s understanding of what beer can be.
Helpful Bar Staff
The staff are helpful too and more than happy to pull a few bottles out of the fridge for you to inspect and mull over. They offer tastes from the taps and they’re happy to pour a tasting flight.
They say they’re trying to keep the bottles rotating well and to ensure there’s always something new and interesting. They’re also more than happy to give you recommendations or share their opinion on beers.
All up, Beer Deluxe opening in Darling Harbour is a great thing for the Sydney beer scene.
Providing local breweries get some good tap space it’ll grow into a favourite place for craft beer lovers. It’s the type of place I can see myself bringing friends and families for overseas because of its location and accessibility to all.
