Bucket Boys is a specialist bottle shop and beer company that fits right into the craft beer heartland that is Marrickville.
Marrickville is one of the craft beer epicentres of the Inner West and perhaps Sydney as a whole. So it’s strange that it took so long for a specialist bottle shop to open in the suburb.
It’s clear that people have been waiting for it, given how busy Bucket Boys can be at any one time.
They’ve already achieved a loyal bunch of regulars, as well as an increasing number of people who will make the journey from further afield.
Bucket Boys: A Beer Company
Bucket Boys has a four tap draft system with rotating beers, including some interstate brewers that they’re distributing into New South Wales. Other times taps will feature special international releases or their own beers, brewed on a pilot system at Willie The Boatman.
From these taps you’re able to get tasters, as well as squealer and growler fills. Linger too long though and you’ll be drawn in by their range of beautifully designed merchandise.
Brewing and distribution fit in alongside the retail aspect of what owners Johnathan Hepner and Clint Elvin see as a beer company.
As well as an excellent online store that ships far and wide, Bucket Boys has an incredible range in store. The focus of the range is primarily independent Australian produce.
Independent And Australian
Excitingly they have a fridge dedicated to local beer. Here you’ll find only Sydney beers with most coming from the Inner West.
There’s a strong focus on independent Australian beer throughout. Because Bucket Boys are distributing interstate breweries themselves, there are many breweries that you’ll find here first before they get out to other bottle shops.
Many of these interstate beers are coming in from Victoria and Tasmania, with the likes of Blizzard Brewing, Ocho and Bruny Island just a few of the interesting names that have entered the Sydney market recently.
Independence is important to the guys at Bucket Boys and this extends to their curated range of wine, spirits and cider.
While the choice isn’t as deep and varied as with the beer, you’re still able to pick up some of the best of independent Australian producers and it’s enough to make anyone geek out over what’s available.
Despite our excellent beer scene in Sydney and across Australia, there’s still a strong demand for international beers. American imports feature prominently, particularly if you look to the shelves of imperial stouts. There’s also some classic Belgian beers with the likes of Dupont and Boon.
You’ll also find a wide range of beers from New Zealand, the UK and emerging scenes like Italy and the Netherlands, along with the best of Scandinavia, including Mikkeller, To Øl and Omnipollo.
As well as making thirsty beer geeks happy, these imports provide an important benchmark for Australian beer. It’s good to be able to compare our local product to the best from around the world.
Run By Industry Pros
The guys behind Bucket Boys are beer industry pros. They’ve been around the scene for a while (Johnathan is even a certified Cicerone). That makes them an incredible resource for recommendations.
It’s worth chatting to them, even if you know what you’re after. Their enthusiasm is infectious and they easily click with customers who share their passion. But at the same time, they’re not in the slightest bit pretentious.
They’re happy to guide customers through a range of styles and recommend beers based on taste.
If you’re still unsure, the shop runs occasional weekend tastings. You can try the beers that some of the best Aussie breweries are making, giving a good sample of what’s available out there.
Bucket Boys is worth checking out, whether you’re a craft beer newbie or an industry pro yourself. The concept of the beer company is something to keep an eye on.
