Beer is intended to be refreshing. And there aren’t many beers as refreshing on a hot summer’s day as Serpents Kiss from The Grifter Brewing Co.
Serpents Kiss is a watermelon pilsner. It was first released for Sydney Craft Beer Week 2015 but since then it’s become a favourite with visitors to the Marrickville brewery bar and in late 2016 it was released in snazzy cans.
A simple and well-made pilsner is about as refreshing as beer gets. Combining this with the mouth-watering and cooling flavour of watermelon and you’re onto a winner.
It takes a hell of a lot of melon to make this beer but it’s easily worth it.
The beer has the appearance of a classic pilsner, a light sparkling straw yellow with a fizzing white head. There’s a cute bitter bite and a delicate hop spice. Combining this with juicy watermelon, which comes through in the aroma too, delivers a balance of flavours that excites the palate.
Balanced Fruit Beer
That’s what’s great about this beer; the balance.
As with any fruited beer, the strength of it lies in being able to taste the underlying beer and this is definitely a pilsner. There’s that subtle malt character underneath a defined hop bitterness which lingers into the aftertaste.
There’s a certain floral element to it which dips out just before a lovely crisp and dry finish.
Serpents Kiss is one of those beers you’re tempted to gulp straight from the can. On a stinking hot day, a tinny straight from the fridge or the esky is going to quench your thirst and soothe your sunburnt head. Don’t ask me how I know but it also makes for a great shower beer.
If you’re not gasping for immediate refreshment, it’s also a great beer to enjoy from an elegant pilsner glass or even by the schooner over lunch.
