The Blue Mountains and the small village of Leura might seem a far cry from the brewing buzz around Sydney’s Inner West and Northern Beaches but you’d be a fool for thinking you can’t get good beer.
Leura Cellars is one of the most well stocked specialist bottle shops around. And what’s more, the majority of the beer is refrigerated. There’s a strong local focus with plenty of beers from around Australia, particularly from the greater Sydney Metro and Blue Mountains regions.
Breweries like Mudgee Brewing Company and Borenore Brewhouse can be found in the fridges. While there’s also stuff from further afield that you don’t see as frequently, like South Australia’s Lobethal Bierhaus.
They have a range of European beers including some out-there sours from Belgium and the US. Lindemans, Boon, Alvinne and Almanac have all been spotted on the shelves.
There’s a friendly local feel, with staff happy to chat. It’s a tight-knit sort of place with regulars on first name terms. Leura Cellars is the kind of place where beer lovers can instantly connect with staff and other customers over a shared passion for beer.
There’s a growler filling station with four taps. When I was there it was all Sydney breweries which is nice to see.
The Leura Cellars branded squealers and growlers are a thing of beauty and the filling station itself is equally beautiful in its clarity.
It makes what, to the uninitiated, could be a strange and intimidating process extremely straightforward and accessible.
There’s definitely a strong community of locals who are regulars, but at Leura Cellars they’re equally accommodating to tourists and passers-by.
If you’re having a long weekend break in the Blue Mountains, Leura Cellars is the place to go to stay stocked up with beer during your visit.
Better yet, it means beer lovers in the Blue Mountains region have a fantastic retailer, capable of quenching their thirst, right on their door step.
