Modus Operandi’s Future Factory IIPA is the final limited release of 2017 from the Mona Vale brewery. It’s another in a series of hazy IPAs.
Modus Operandi well and truly jumped on the haze train during 2017. The virtually simultaneous release of Gadzooks! and Tropical Contact High laid down a marker. They’re giving the people want they want.
Full Juice, Half Haze
Future Factory is billed as a hazy double IPA but there’s still a bright golden glow to the beer. It doesn’t posses the turbidity of some of the New England styles we’ve seen. It’s important to note though that the words “New England” don’t appear anywhere on the label. There is just a slight haze, palatable to more traditional drinkers.
The aroma and flavour is all there. Raising the glass you’re hit by a juicy fruit bomb. Grapefruit, pineapple, passion fruit and peach present as if squelching and dribbling right in front of your face.
This character comes from a fair whack of Citra and Galaxy, two highly aromatic, fruit forward hops. It combines a beautiful citrus tang found in many American Citra IPAs with a familiar tropical fruit salad flavour profile from the Galaxy. It’s a simple yet magnificent pairing of hops.
The texture has a feeling of soft water as it crosses the palate. There’s a certain minerality to it but you have to pay close attention to pick it up. Flaked barley and oats contribute to the haziness and the softness in the mouthfeel.
There’s just a bit of body from the 8.5% ABV. It doesn’t feel slick or thick. It’s light and while not pillowy it has a soft touch right down to the finish. It drinks well under the ABV which is perhaps due to the fruity taste tricking the senses into thinking it’s something far more sedate.
On the finish there’s only slight bitterness. It doesn’t finish with a bang or even a snap but allows the fruit smoothie flavours to linger on the palate. There’s a Juicy Fruit chewing gum taste right at the end but take another swig and a splash of tropical punch hits you again.
Perhaps Future Factory is a hazy IPA for people still not convinced by the New England Style. It looks more like a West Coast IPA and it doesn’t have the soluble paracetamol mouthfeel of the very opaque beers but it retains a bucketload of fruit juice aroma and flavour.
