Modus Pale Ale is becoming something of a flagship beer for Modus Operandi. Perhaps it doesn’t have the same reputation as Former Tenant but it was released in cans at the same time and it never disappoints.
Modus Pale Ale easily holds its own against other pale ales from around Sydney. And it’s been recognised as such, winning Champion Pale Ale 2015, which is probably what has elevated it in Modus Operandi’s portfolio and in the eyes of many beer drinkers.
A Glass Of Liquid Gold
It pours a golden colour, right at the very top of the colour spectrum in terms of what you’d expect from a modern American style pale ale. It froths up with a pure white head but it doesn’t hold it too long.
As far as the carbonation goes, it’s not over the top. There’s enough to make it a satisfying and refreshing drink but not too much that it prevents you gulping it down on a warm day.
This beer is dry hopped with Simcoe and there’s plenty of sappy pine and biting grapefruit both in the aroma and in its flavour.
It’s moderately drying and very satisfying in its mouthfeel.
Sydney beer drinkers are lucky that this is now available in cans but I also recommend getting over to the Modus Operandi brewery bar and trying it fresh on tap there. It packs a flavourful punch and dry hopped beers are often best when enjoyed at the source.
This is a classic US style pale ale which fits perfectly in the Aussie market. It’d go with virtually any food but pizzas or burgers would be a great place to start.
