There’s a place in Sydney’s CBD which combines great music with great beer, Mojo Record Bar.
Okay, so this writer has another hobby. Records. Like, real vinyl. It’s a new hobby, I’m not an expert or a collector. I just like owning a tangible copy of the music I love. I sometimes tweet about it on my personal twitter account, @timothyhodge.
So, what does this have to do with craft beer venues in Sydney? Well, wouldn’t you know it, there’s a place that combines both. Mojo Record Bar, on York Street in the CBD.
This place is cool. Go down the stairs and on your left you can see guys like me flicking through boxes of records (new releases and second hand alike; jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, latin and more). Continue onwards and you enter the bar.
There are booths, bar stools and tables for couples or groups. It’s dark, but more moody than dingy. It’s definitely got that music bar vibe.
You could imagine John Cusack from the film of Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity, slumping at the bar, taking a swig from a brown bottle and turning to moan at the camera.
They’re into their craft beer here and seem stoked about featuring some top local and Aussie breweries. There’s a good range of bottled beer and a few taps which change every so often. You’ll find names like Wayward and Lord Nelson here.
If the bar isn’t rammed three or four deep, the bar staff are generally happy to recommend a beer based on your tastes. From my experience, there definitely seems to be bartenders who know their beers, and those who know their cocktails. So, find out who’s the best person to ask.
The walls are adorned with posters and photos. You’ll recognise many of the framed album covers, and there’ll probably be more that intrigue you.
It always seems fairly busy, unless you go for lunch time drinks, which is also a good time to browse the record store.
On weekdays between 5 and 6pm it fills up quickly with suited men, loosening their ties. It’s generally got a very good atmosphere though.
There are a lot of good bars around this area of the CBD and Mojo Record Bar is very close to Spooning Goats (an even smaller bar), so if you can’t fit into Mojo, try SG out.
Hours: Mon-Wed: 4pm-12am, Thur-Sat: 4pm-1am, Sun: Closed
If you’ve been to Mojo, or any other bars in the CBD, let me know your experience in the comments. Or share this post and tell people where you want to meet for your next after-work drinks.
