Nomad Long Reef Pale Ale is released in cans just in time for summer 16/17.
Nomad are known for releasing a lot of limited edition beers. Mostly these hit bottle shops in 500ml bottles. For spring/summer 2016 though, they’ve released some in cans.
Another Pale Ale?
This is a pale ale to sit alongside their core range pales; Cruisin’ Pale Ale and the rebranded Sideways Hoppy Pale.
It’s an interesting decision to package a new pale ale in cans when Nomad already have two core beers of a similar style.
Comparatively, Long Reef is more of a bold, hop-forward style than the Cruisin’ Pale Ale and more Australian in its flavour profile than the American-inspired Sideways Hoppy Pale.
Long Reef pours a beautiful rich golden colour, with a light white foam head. Fruit salad aromas of grapefruit, passionfruit, rockmelon and a touch of lime swirl around the nostrils.
These aromas are thanks to the unmistakeable character of Galaxy and Summer hops.
The initial sip has a touch of biting bitterness before the malt backbone comes to the fore to balance things out in the mid-palate. The bitterness returns at the end though, after a finish which is pleasantly dry.
It’s a proper Aussie pale ale and it’s nice to see it sitting over the 5% mark. This is the season that session beers seem to be most prominent so it’s a good move on Nomad’s part to release a full strength pale ale in 330ml cans.
Named in dedication to Northern beaches landmark, Long Reef, the copy on the can calls both beer and reef “big and bold but at the same time familiar and comforting”.
Nomad Long Reef Pale Ale is a beer equally suited to crushing while cruising in the passenger seat of a 4×4, or on the beach on a stinking hot day, as it is to gulping down while throwing some steaks on the barbecue at home.
As far as the can artwork goes, it’s pretty damn good for a wraparound (a basic silver can to which a label is wrapped round as opposed to being printed on the actual tinny).
Nomad Long Reef Pale Ale is in relatively limited supply but it could be found either at the brewery or in respected bottle shops.
