20+ taps with knowledgable bar staff in central Sydney
Pyrmont. It’s a conundrum. It’s so close to the city, it’s so slick and swanky but isn’t it a bit boring? Some might have you believe that.
There’s definitely one good reason to visit: Quarrymans Hotel, an unashamedly craft beer focused pub.
After Sydney Craft Beer Week 2014, they hoisted the flags of various craft breweries on the old flag poles atop the building. When you visit you should be able to see them fluttering in the wind, signifying the phenomenal refreshment to be had inside.
It features at least twenty taps which rotate regularly. There’s usually a good cross-section of beers from across Australia, and the beer menu includes a description of the beer as well as the brewery and where it’s from so you’ll always be clued up before you dive in.
Prices vary and sometimes you might be looking at around $15+ for a pint but with the number of beers available you’ll probably want to stick to halves. Either way, prices aren’t too much for what you’re getting which is incredible quality craft beers.
Craft beer heaven in Sydney
I’ve tried some amazing beers on the occasions I’ve visited, including some 4 Pines Keller Door releases, Brew Cult’s infamous Pepper Steak Porter, and Sex, Drugs & Rocky Road from Queensland brewery, Bacchus.
You’ll find a good range of styles, from solid Aussie pale ales, through to sours and some on the bigger and boozier end of the spectrum.
You could grab lunch at the bustling nearby fish markets and wash it down with a couple of drinks at Quarrymans. Alternatively, the seasonal menus are always exciting with something for everyone.
Being a solid Aussie pub, they have plenty of weekday evening offers which vary from time to time (your typical pub pint and a pie deals etc.).
Alternatively, get down on a Monday evening for $5 halves as they try to empty the kegs and clean the lines. The offer stands until they run out of beer. It’s great because it’s offering good beer at a discount and it lets the craft beer nerds know that they take the job of serving beer seriously!
Sydney’s local pub
The bar staff are friendly. They won’t hesitate to offer you tasters and they’re more than happy to talk about the beers, answer any questions you have or offer recommendations.
They’re trying to get a local feel and they’re on their way to achieving it. There’s a hello and goodbye for everyone who comes through the doors, which in a busy city full of people rushing about makes a lovely change.
Their 2nd birthday party captured this local atmosphere perfectly. It was a brilliant day.
Outside, there’s a sheltered beer garden and upstairs a restaurant focus. But it’s the bar downstairs where the real action happens.
Quarrymans throw themselves into local events and they’ll often be on the program for craft beer week and other major happenings. You might even see the occasional brewing celebrity in there on special nights.
I’ve whiled away long afternoons sat at the bar sampling various beers and reading a book. It’s a beautiful way to spend a lazy Sunday.
