Royal Albert Hotel, Surry Hills

The Royal Albert Hotel has become something of a craft beer institution in Sydney.

Royal Albert Hotel

Close to the city, in the trendy suburb of Surry Hills, the Royal Albert Hotel somehow manages to retain a down to earth atmosphere.

The Royal Albert Hotel takes pride in its history and wears its Surry Hills identity on its sleeve.

A Go-To Place For Good Beer

With an ever-changing tap list, they’ve become a favourite with beer nerds around the city. Perhaps it’s just the great beer or perhaps it’s that it feels like an old local. Like The Local Taphouse, there’s something comforting about it. It’s a home away from home where you can relax with a beer.

It’s a cosy old pub with a tight main bar area that gets heaving on a Friday night. There’s further seating and a dining area out the back but the main bar is definitely where the action is, with some quality local and imported beer.

You’re likely to find names such as Modus Operandi and Young Henrys. In the past they’ve had various tap takeovers, featuring the likes of Thornbridge (UK) and Rodenbach (Belgium).

They know their craft beer at the Royal Albert but they’re not pretentious about it. You’ll get served a fantastic beer with no fuss.

A Meeting of Locals And Beer Nerds

It’s the kind of place that will be packed with groups of locals on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon but you’re just as likely to see a beer nerd enjoying some down time on their own.

Like all good craft beer venues in Sydney, the lone drinker doesn’t need to fear the odd looks that you might get in other central bars and pubs.

The Big Decision: Dumplings or Burgers?

The food is also impressive but it’s not your typical pub grub, that’s for sure. You can either go for the Bamboo Dumpling Bar menu; serving, as you’d guess from the name, dumplings.

Alternatively go with the bar menu which features a range of American inspired chicken wings and hot dogs, as well as burgers, including their infamous royale with cheese.

As well as the aforementioned tap takeovers, the Royal Albert Hotel runs the odd event, especially during Sydney Craft Beer Week.

It’s another great centrally located craft beer pub and could form the part of a fantastic crawl that includes Dove & Olive, Keg & Brew and perhaps ends up at Bitter Phew. If you didn’t have plans for the weekend, you do now.
