It’s a story which is familiar around the beer world – not just in Australia – home brewing mates who decide to take a leap of faith and go pro.
And thank your lucky stars Shenanigans did because the Sydney beer scene wouldn’t be the same without them.
Sam and Dan, the guys behind the Shenanigans Brewing Co label, started gypsy brewing at Batch in Marrickville. They’re from Enmore and Marrickville so they’re retaining the local feel which is such a big part of the creative craft breweries popping up in Sydney’s Inner West.
Between the two of them, and surely not without a few creative disagreements, they come up with the recipes and do the brews themselves.
The beers nearly always showcase something familiar with a touch of something original to make them stand out. The design is to make newbies comfortable enough to try them but to also drive beer nerds crazy with excitement.
Like fellow gypsy brewer, Doctor’s Orders, the beers are meant to be thought provoking. Nowhere is this more evident than in their “stunt beers”; limited release experimental batches which are creating waves among Sydney’s beer fans.
