Sneaky Possum opened up on Abercrombie Street, on the site formerly occupied by Zigi’s Art, Wine & Cheese bar.
It’s one of those new wave venues that combines early morning cafe offerings with elegantly designed food and a top notch drinks list. We’ve seen similar things with the likes of Euro-inspired Creek & Cella in Leichhardt and High Street Social in Penrith.
It seems that more and more venues are combining early morning coffee shop convenience with well-designed restaurant menus and trendy evening bar settings. Rolling these diverse models into one makes sense given the competition out there but it’s also hard to do well.
Luckily for residents of Chippendale, Sneaky Possum has it down to a fine art.
People will swing by for a takeaway coffee, groups will settle in for a long, lazy lunch but you’ll still find couples, mates and the odd beer enthusiast mingling around the bar.
Eclectic Beer List
Among the beverage options, beer plays a major part. There are approachable choices such as Balter’s XPA on tap. It sits alongside beers from Wayward, Young Henrys and interstate breweries such as Holgate and Black Hops. There are also cans and bottles from other Australian breweries, including plenty of local names.
They’re not afraid of showcasing adventurous styles either. For each XPA you’ll find a sour beer or a double IPA. It keeps things interesting and it shows that venues can push the boundaries and challenge people with new and exciting beers.
Visiting with people who don’t like beer is made easy with the presence of three wines on tap. There’s also a spirits selection sitting behind the bar that’ll turn the head of anyone who stops by.
Brunch-time Beers & Bar Snacks
The food menu is equally inspiring, whether you go for chips or oysters as a bar snack, lunchtime sandwiches, a selection of cheeses, or a hearty and meaty main.
If Sneaky Possum has a signature item on the menu it would be the 63 degree slow cooked eggs which come on a variety of dishes and seem particularly popular among local brunchers. If you’re on the lookout for a brunch-time beer, Sneaky Possum is as good an option as any.
Chippendale: Sneakily Good
Chippendale has become a serious food and drink hotspot in the last few years and Sneaky Possum adds to the options in a suburb that’s punching well above its weight.
Other spots in Chippendale include The Rose, The Duck Inn and Beer Barrel Growler Station. A short walk to Redfern and you can find yourself at The Noble Hops, or Glebe and you’ll be at Staves. Locals are certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to good beer.
Hours: Mon-Tues: 6:30am – 3pm, Wed-Sat: 6:30am – 12am, Sun: 8am – 9pm
