New places to get great local beer are popping up all the time in Sydney. Staves Brewery Bar in Glebe was a fair while coming but it’s now in full swing.
It’s in an unexpected location, right next to Broadway shopping centre. So if you’re with a loved one who is set on doing some shopping, all you need to do is slip around the corner into Staves for sweet escape.
Inside, beer mugs and tankards hang from the ceiling, bottles line the walls under the staircase and there are barrels where you can prop up a stool and rest your drinking arm.
Outside there’s a beer garden where you can easily forget that you’re sat in a commercial estate right at the junction of Broadway, City Road and Parramatta Road. The sun streams down and there’s good beer to be had.
You may see the owner, Steve Drissell, behind the bar pulling pints from the hand pump style tap handles. He’s the type that’s up for talking about the beer or just having a general chat. He, and the other bar staff, are more than willing to recommend a beer to suit your tastes.
The local feel is a reflection of Steve’s enthusiasm for the craft beer scene and good beer in general.
Now, however, you’ll mostly find Staves own beers, brewed in the stainless steel you see behind the bar. Steve has brought on Liam Jackson as head brewer and they’re producing both approachable and adventurous styles.
A Long Time Coming
The brewery bar was a long time coming and first piqued the interest of Sydney’s craft beer community in 2013. A series of set backs, unfortunate events and unplanned developments delayed the launch until 2015.
While Staves may have missed out on a couple of busy years in the Sydney beer scene, it opened at a fantastic time, as more and more people are looking for local pubs and bars that can serve them craft beer.
There’s a great feel inside the brewery bar and it’ll be exciting to see it grow as a popular venue. Staves Brewery is somewhat of a sanctuary for beer lovers, away from the hustle and bustle of the busy intersections and crowded shopping centres nearby.
With great beer by the half or the pint it’s very easy to while away a few hours.
