Surry Hills has some great venues but good local beer hasn’t always played a part. The Horse is changing that.
The Horse on Crown Street received a makeover in mid-2017. Previously The White Horse, it had seen a few taps of local beer with the likes of Young Henrys featuring regularly. Now it features a healthy selection with locals Yulli’s Brews appearing alongside Batch and other inner Sydney breweries.
There’s New South Wales and national representation too with a range of other familiar names such as Uralla’s New England Brewing.
A Modern Aussie Pub
The decor at The Horse is familiar to those that pay attention to pub overhauls. There’s a pool table, exposed timber and metal, wall murals and barrels surrounded by bar stools. It looks great but the beer is probably where the interest is for anyone reading this website.
While there are still a few taps of international and big name Australian pale lagers, the move towards independent beer is reassuring.
There’s a reliable pub grub menu too, from bar snacks to more substantial lunches. At the heart of the menu is chicken from Chicken & Sons.
Craft Beer On Crown
The Horse is conveniently located for those heading to the SCG or football stadium. It’s sure to see plenty of foot traffic from people trekking up Foveaux Street from Central Station toward Moore Park.
Crown Street, with its incredible variety of food, coffee, wine, cocktails and independent shopping boutiques, has for a long time lacked a truly great craft beer offering. There’s The Clock with a few decent taps, and Yulli’s vegetarian restaurant serving their own fantastic beers, but this famous and popular part of Surry Hills has been missing a good beer pub.
At the time of its relaunch, it’s surely only rivalled by The Dolphin which received its own makeover not many months earlier. The specialty offering there is the wine room.
While some Swannies supporters might dream of a pre-match warm up in a wine room, the majority of footy fans ploughing down Crown Street are going to be enticed by The Horse and its good beer offering.
