Glebe is home to one of Sydney’s best small bars with an awesome beer list, The Little Guy.
Glebe. It’s just full of restaurants, isn’t it? What’s more, they’re nearly all good. But where does one get a good beer?
Well, Flying Fajita Sisters offers bottles of Day of the Dead and Mr Falcon’s has some great beers and live music in quirky surrounds. While just off Glebe Point Road is Staves.
But it’s The Little Guy that has to take the crown as this hip suburb’s best bar. It’s a small bar in every sense.
Like most places along Glebe Point Road, it’s a converted terrace house. There’s a tiny upstairs room with some antique furniture and a back window which you can peer through for a perfect view of Centrepoint Tower.
Start Your Weekend at the Bar
There’s a bit more room through the back with small stools around large communal blackboard tables, which come with buckets of chalk for you to doodle while you chat.
The bar is where you want to be though. Just make sure you get there early to get a seat. The bar staff are attentive and friendly and they’ll serve you up some mean spicy popcorn which will keep you coming back for more booze.
They keep the atmosphere going whether it’s a chilled afternoon or a pumping jukebox or open mic night.
It can get kind of rowdy some nights, especially if there are deals on cheap tinnies and local students are out, but get there between 5pm and 6pm on a Friday, hunker down on a bar stool or near the large front window, and make the perfect start to your weekend.
An Excellent Beer List
But what about the beer? Well, there are three taps, one of which is usually cider. Rocks Brewing has a fairly consistent presence but new stuff pops up occasionally.
During Sydney Craft Beer Week 2014 there were some hip-hop inspired brews including the Iggy Az-ale-a Cherry Witbier. Slightly more easy-going than its intense namesake, it was a gorgeous pink colour and incredible refreshing.
Tap beers are served in halves or pints and the bottle range is extensive. Everything from tinnies of Sixstring, via classic Mornington Peninsula and Riverside brews, through to hefty Brewcult Get Down Browns and HopDog SuperBeast barleywines.
The choice varies from time to time but the joy is in the fact you can get a beer for $5 or you can get a beer for $25.
It’s a Sydney favourite for me and always has a top notch atmosphere.
Hours: Mon-Fri: 4pm-12am, Sat: 1pm-12am, Sun: 3pm-10pm
