The Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst

If you had to pick a craft beer epicentre for Sydney, The Local Taphouse might just be it.

The Local Taphouse

A venue that’s beer provider first, pub second.

The owners are the ones behind the famous St. Kilda pub of the same name, as well as the GABS beer festival which first arrived in Sydney in 2015.

This is a place I always want to get to more and more, no matter how many times I go. It’s sole focus is fantastic beer and the staff pride themselves on their knowledge of the beers they serve, how they should be served, and how they should be enjoyed.

Whether you’re going in for a pint after footy training, or for a tasting flight early one Saturday afternoon, it’s the perfect venue and the staff there are going to find you the beer you want.

Local Taphouse beersThey have events and even a club (which it’s about time I joined) which includes invites to special brewers nights and early access to some awesome beers from near and far.

They’ve run US themed nights with some of the best of American craft. And you know it’s only ever going to be top quality and the freshest it can be.

That’s what The Local Taphouse promises and that’s what it delivers. It’s a reputation they’ve forged for themselves through years of great work and commitment to the Sydney beer scene.

I’ve been in for snack lunches (they need to keep the arancini on the menu forever) and for drinks before the AFL (go Swannies!). It’s always pumping with a good atmosphere.

The main bar area is quite small but it’s filled with jollity and people seem to get on. In a way this clashes with the outward appearance of the pub which retains its old “style”.

Tiled walls and rough paintwork, it looks like the kind of pub you’d cross the street to avoid  a few years ago. Now it’s a haven for beer nerds, hipsters, footy fans and couples young and old.

The Local Taphouse 1

The Local Taphouse does what the very best pubs do. It just exists.

It exists as a venue that provides comfort and good beer. It’s a kind of “third place”, outside home and outside work, this is where you want to be. Gather around with friends, family and a few of the best craft beers available and you’re guaranteed a good time.

The staff are obviously very busy but they’re helpful and they don’t mind pouring a tasting paddle at most times of the day.

As always with Sydney’s popular beer venues, it’s worth checking The Local Taphouse out on Now Tapped! to see what they’re currently pouring.
