In the back streets of Rozelle there sits one of Sydney’s most celebrated craft beer venues, The Welcome Hotel.
It’s a proper old pub but one that carries a shiny veneer and elegance that fits the suburb. Two things are guaranteed at The Welcome Hotel, good food and good beer.
The beer lists vary but there are always taps serving local favourites such as Young Henrys, Batch and Ekim. They’re good at updating their listing on Now Tapped! so keep checking in to see what they’re pouring.
Traditional Pub Feel
The main bar area has an old English pub feel with carpets, dark wood furniture and cosy corners. There are TVs which are often showing sports but these are far from distracting if you just want to sit down for some lunch and a pint.
The bar menu features lots of favourites; impressive tower burgers, pies, and some of the better fish and chips in Sydney.
First Class Beer Service
The service is great and they really know their beer. Behind the bar, they’re happy to have a chat about the beers they have on and recommend something to fit your tastes. I witnessed first-hand some excellent recommendations given to non-craft beer people who seemed to be thrilled with what they were served.
Throughout the rest of the pub, it’s light and airy with open spaces leading into the commendable restaurant arm of the pub, Ajo. This serves beautiful Italian dishes that are more than Instagram-worthy.
However, if it’s the beer you’re visiting The Welcome for, you’ll want to keep walking through to the beer garden. It’s a walled space but beautifully furnished with large tables and chairs, parasols to keep out of the sun when it beats down.
And it does beat down in the garden, so be careful. There’s plenty of greenery and it’s an incredibly comfortable to sit over a few beers.
There are heaters in the winter and large screens mounted on the walls which come in handy around Grand Final time.
Doing Great Things For Local Beer
As you might expect given the pub’s commitment to great beer, they’re not shy of getting involved with events. They hosted a few during Sydney Craft Beer Week 2015 and I’m sure they will again.
The Welcome Hotel is doing great things for craft beer in Rozelle simply by having helpful staff, a comfortable environment and good food. A well curated menu and delicious dishes do a lot to elevate the local beer that’s being served.
It demonstrates that a pub with a focus on beer can be more than the traditional notion of the Aussie hotel and that it beer can be a fine accompaniment to a range of food.
Rightly so, The Welcome Hotel has been celebrated in Time Out and Beer & Brewer magazine and if that’s not enough evidence, let me add my humble voice to the choir in urging you to make a trip to Rozelle and check it out. You won’t regret it!
