This could turn out to be an historic beer in many ways. It’s the first beer brewed at Wayward Brewing’s new Camperdown brewery and is a celebration of the local area and a nod to its community.
Parallels could be drawn with Young Henrys Newtowner, another summer ale with a local focus.
It’s not only smart of Wayward to create something in appreciation of the community around them, it’s in keeping with what we’ve seen from many other Sydney craft brewers.
Try it at the source
I tried the Camperdown 1 at the brewery tasting room, straight from the source and as fresh as it could possibly be.
It’s a brightly coloured golden yellow. There’s a fresh hoppy nose to it with some citrus. It’s a summer ale in style and here’s hoping it stays available all through the hotter months.
Camperdown 1 shows off a beautiful, frothy white head. It leaves some lovely lacing down the glass and looks fantastic. The taste is hop forward with some mellow citrus and grassy flavours.
At 4.5% it’s still well within the sessionable range, meaning you could quite easily enjoy a few of these on a baking summer’s day.
The mouthfeel is light, and the carbonation is just at the right level so that it sparkles on the tongue but doesn’t get too bloating.
Brewed for the local community, accessible to all
It’s a beer that is extremely accessible to people new to craft beer. I’m not sure whether this was a conscious move or not but it makes sense that a beer brewed for locals should be something that everyone would like to drink.
When Wayward start selling growlers at the brewery, this would be a great one to get a fill of and take out to a party or to share with mates at a barbecue.
The initial signs from Wayward’s new brewery suggest a bright future. I hope that Camperdown 1 might become a central part of that future and something of a signature for the brewery.
That is, unless they want to brew Camperdown 2 as a birthday celebration beer. I’m sure Sydney’s beer geeks could get on board with that.Wayward Camperdown 1 is a fresh, accessible, hoppy summer ale brewed for the local community. Click To Tweet

Wayward Camperdown 1 A Year On
Since the brewery’s launch, Camperdown 1 has gone through a few recipe tweaks. While it’s still the same sort of beer, an English style pale ale with bold hop aroma, it’s got better and better.
It was released in bottles almost a year to the day since Wayward opened up their doors.
Beer style: English Summer Ale
Pair with: Barbecue chicken and potato salad
