Wayward Charmer has been around for quite a while in one form or another. In September 2016, it finally received a bottle release and aren’t we thankful for it?
Starting simply with what Charmer is, it’s a hoppy red ale. An India red ale if you will.
Immediately the liquid shines like a ruby in the glass. There’s a touch of haze to it which is what you’d expect from unfiltered beers, as all Wayward’s are.
Harmonious Hops And Malt
The fresh hop aroma pours through the slightly off-white head. The different layers of hops are evident given the five additions of Aussie and Kiwi hops. There’s light grassy notes underlying some grapefruit and subtle mandarin pith.
In the background, biscuity malt plays around with the light and fruity hop flavours, creating a perfect balance to the overall taste.
The beer finishes with a soft, lingering bitterness. As it dries in the mouth, it simultaneously refreshes and keeps you going back for more.
A Sessionable Sydney Stalwart
Wayward Charmer is one of those stalwart Sydney beers, like Shenanigans Winston, that just seems to get better and better every time.
It has all the flavour of an IPA and a red ale packed into an easy drinking 5% ABV beer, meaning, if you’re drinking it on draught, this is one to enjoy by the pint.
All in all, Charmer is an incredibly balanced beer which makes it immensely quaffable. As a Friday knock-off or as part of a weekend session, it’s up there with some of the best beers Sydney has to offer.
Enjoy It Fresh
This is a beer to be enjoyed fresh, either in the bottle from one of Sydney’s many bottle shops, or straight from the source.
Charmer could go with a variety of food but a classic American style pepperoni pizza is about as good a pairing as anything.
