Young Henrys Dr Röt Fifer was the official beer of Australian Comic-Con 2016. It’s a Vienna lager that pours a beautiful dark amber as you’d expect.
This feature on the Comic-Con beer comes a fair while after the original convention but it came back to Sydney this weekend so it seems an appropriate time. If you see a bottle around, it’s worth picking up.
Vienna lagers aren’t seen nearly as frequently as they should be. They’re such a beautiful style when done well, so it’s nice to see Young Henrys brew one.
Dr Röt Fifer has an initial hoppy nose which is surprising for this style but the stonefruit that comes through is reminiscent of American and Australian pale ales. The hops used are Hallertau Blanc and there’s plenty of juicy apricot in the aroma.
There’s a definite malt presence on the nose, as well as in both the mid-palate and finish. Up front it’s light caramel and white bread, whereas the way it lingers is closer to caramel biscuits and coffee. The juicy hop flavour stays around though and balances this malt backbone. The off-white head leaves gorgeous lacing down the glass.
As you’d expect from a beer made for Comic-Con, the label looks pretty awesome with an illustration of Dr Röt Fifer which is incredible in its detail, thanks to local illustrator Doug Holgate.
I’m by no means a comic book guy so it’s not a character I’m familiar with but hopefully it resonated with the Comic-Con crowd. The feedback at the time of the event was certainly positive.
The copy on the bottle label says to pair with your favourite wurst and I’d have to agree with this suggestion. Perhaps a dark blood sausage would be particularly enjoyable, given the dark malty body and the way the Hallertau hops could cut through the rich meatiness of the sausage.
