Simplicity is often an overlooked quality in craft beer. Young Henrys Natural Lager is a great example of where it’s so valuable.
Natural Lager (actually a Kellerbier / Zwickelbier) is an unfiltered lager. It’s a slightly cloudy golden-yellow colour with a thin bubbly white head.
This beer uses noble Australian hops Summer, Sylva and Helga. There are ever so slight citrus aromas but a more familiar light lager spice on the palate with very little bitterness.
It’s crisp and clean as any good lager should be.
Versatility often follows simplicity and the easy-drinking nature of Natural Lager makes it an incredible table beer.
A beer that can be shared among friends or family at dinner time is something which is often overlooked in the hipster-bar world of craft beer but this is as good a beer as any for this purpose.
Grab a longneck and treat it like you would a bottle of white wine. Get it nice and cold and keep glasses filled.
The subtle flavours of the beer will go nicely with most food: a Caprese salad, fish and chips or grilled chicken are all good options.
So what else is great about this beer? If you’re looking to convert a craft beer sceptic, get this in front of them.
Many people who haven’t had their craft epiphany yet will be drinking tried-and-tested macro pale lagers and they might not be aware of the different appearance and flavours lagers can have.
This makes a perfect “gateway beer”. Someone used to drinking lager is more likely to try this than the 10% barrel-aged imperial stout you’ve been raving about.
Drink this from a tall, slender pilsner glass or, if you’re really rock-n-roll, grab a growler of it and pass it around with some mates while you kick back in the sun.
