The Iron Duke Hotel in Alexandria has slowly become a bit of an unexpected oasis of good beer in an area that has somewhat lacked options until now.

One sign that the Sydney beer scene has developed is the number of suburban pubs that can be considered as good beer venues. Less than five years ago these same pubs would have been destinations for beer geeks across the city.
A Little Oasis
The Iron Duke Hotel in Alexandria is one such example. With a number of taps rotating through the likes of Modus Operandi, The Grifter, Batch Brewing, Kaiju, New England Brewing and more, it would have been a go-to place for Sydney’s beer lovers just a few years ago.
Now it just happens to be a damn good local to have on your doorstep. And if you’re not from the area, it’s a little oasis once you’re bored of the carpet showrooms and outlet stores that seem to fill Alexandria’s business parks.
Classically Aussie
The pub itself is classically Aussie. Awnings hang over the street at intersecting main roads, high ceilings and piercing light help to soften the dark wood bar area, while a courtyard provides the perfect environment in which to watch the cricket while sipping your schooner.
It’s clean, comfortable, and there’s damn good beer. This part of town was blessed with a couple of good coffee shops, and while Alexandria has had The Rocks Brewing Co’s brewery bar for a while (which has since changed hands and been the subject of rebranding), the arrival of a good beer pub is a welcome addition to the area.
